To the south and west of Lyon the hills of Monts du Lyonnais provide respite from the city spin and tranquillity among the forest dressed hills and small villages with cherry orchards. To the east the small medieval cities of Pérouges and Crémieu are charming and make an interesting change. Pérouges is covered with cobblestones and has quite a reputation having been used in films such as The Three Musketeers and the residents fight hard to preserve the original charm of the village. The place du Halle in the main street has some well preserved medieval remains. Crémieu dates back to the ninth century AD and while it has lovely architecture, the best thing about it are the locally produced sausage. Worth a visit on the journey back to Lyon is the Musée de la Mine at Pierre-la-Palud fifteen kilometres west of Lyon affords the claustrophobic opportunity to go down into the sulphate mine shaft to experience first hand the plight of miners. If you want to try staying outside the city there is a tiny village called Yzeron that has a quaint hotel that also does fantastic evening traditional cuisine. |
