For a city with the reputation as "the city that never sleeps", New York has a lot to live up to. Fortunately it easily does so. Most bars stay open until 2 am though some remain open until 4 am. The legal drinking age is 21 and you may be asked for i.d. by the bartender. New York has imposed a smoking ban in public places so smoking is not allowed in pubs or clubs. However, because of a loophole, businesses which can prove most of their profits come from the sale of tobacco can still do so. "Happy hour" is between 5pm and 7pm and during this time many bars will offer 2 drinks for the price of one. You may pay for your drinks one at a time; however, it is more common practice to run a tab, paying your full bill at the end of the night. Don't forget to tip the bartender!
